The evolution of M.C. Escher
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again … M.C. Escher is one of the all-time best artists—ever. He was brilliant. And he was always coming up with the most amazing works of art.
Escher’s earlier stuff was good. I mean, it was really interesting. Like most artists, he did landscapes …

… and portraits …

… and, you know, other standard images. Like your typical picture of giant insects walking through a graveyard …

But then he started to get even more far out. And he began to combine his wild imagination with the structure of mathematics. That is, he began to create images that were totally out of this world … but that also looked realistic.

And then … Escher got into symmetry. Which is when things really got good….

So are the two pictures of the older man self portraits?
And the two other images are interesting — one looks like it’s in dinosaur times, the other looks like it’s another planet (I think because it sort of lacks atmosphere).
Good stuff… hurry up and post more.
That’s a good question. The first portrait is of Escher’s father. The second person–reflected in the sphere–is a self-portrait of M.C. Yeah, all of these pictures are really interesting, huh?
