Babe Ruth + Led Zeppelin
In baseball, Babe Ruth is known as one of the all-time greats. He made history by leading the New York Yankees to the World Series many times. And today, he’s still remembered as the Home Run King. In the world of sports, Babe Ruth is a legend. (I mean, he died over 60 years ago and he still has his own official website.)
Dire Straits even wrote a song about Ruth called “Sultans of Swing.” (His famous batting skills earned him a lot of popular nicknames.) But there’s something interesting about Babe Ruth that people don’t remember … he was also the Strike Out King. It’s true. In his day, Ruth was just as infamous for missing the ball during his trips to the plate. What can I say? He was totally hit-and-miss.
Just like Ruth, musicians take big swings. Sometimes they might totally flop. But why play it safe? Because when they do get a hit, it’s a home run. Probably the best example is the band Led Zeppelin—the popular rock band from the 1970s.
Listen to their greatest hits once and you’ll be hooked. Track after track is excellent. When they got it right, they really got it right. But have you ever heard one of their regular albums? It’s a pretty different experience. Maybe it’s just me, but a lot of their stuff … well, strikes out.
But hey, at least Zeppelin did everything with energy. Like Babe Ruth, their philosophy was “go big or go home.” And obviously, it worked. Because, when they struck gold, the heavens opened up. So what’s your style of music? Do you play it safe a lot? Or do you sometimes take a risk and swing for the fence?
