Doorbells
Back in the day, I remember taking a sociology class in school. The professor’s name was Dr. Gallego and he was about four feet tall. As a kid, he grew up as a rough street gangster in Los Angeles. But then, as luck would have it, he randomly received an academic scholarship that changed his life.
Anyway, fast forward a few years and he’s lecturing to me and my classmates about doorbells of all things. Professor Gallego pointed out that we can learn a lot about someone simply by listening to the sound of their doorbell.
For example, when someone doesn’t have a doorbell, it might be because their house is small (… so they simply can hear when we knock), or maybe it’s because they’re doorbell is broken and they can’t afford to fix it. On the other hand, a doorbell that makes a short buzzing sound might tell us something else about a particular person.
And when we hear the classic “ding dong,” we might learn something entirely different about a person. The sound of a man’s doorbell gives us a big clue about his life and personality … before he even answers the door!
Professor Gallego then went on to talk about people with musical doorbells. You know, the ringing chimes that play a pleasant melody as you’re standing on the front porch. Some of those doorbells can get pretty elaborate. And the professor’s theory was that style of ring usually means a person has a lot of money … and maybe likes to read and work in the garden, too. (Honestly, I don’t remember exactly what he said, but it was something like that.)
Whether any of that is true or not isn’t really the point. But it has got me thinking … what doorbell would you choose? For example, if you had to pick one of the following options, which would you prefer? A doorbell that plays:
a) “Drive My Car” (by The Beatles)
b) “My Humps” (by The Black-Eyed Peas)
c) “What A Wonderful World” (by Louis Armstrong)
It’s totally up to you. Or maybe you’d choose a different song. What would it be? Seriously … let me know.
