The evolution of M.C. Escher

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again … M.C. Escher is one of the all-time best artists—ever. He was brilliant. And he was always coming up with the most amazing works of art.

Escher’s earlier stuff was good. I mean, it was really interesting. Like most artists, he did landscapes …

… and portraits …

… and, you know, other standard images. Like your typical picture of giant insects walking through a graveyard …

But then he started to get even more far out. And he began to combine his wild imagination with the structure of mathematics. That is, he began to create images that were totally out of this world … but that also looked realistic.

And then … Escher got into symmetry. Which is when things really got good….
