Yellow
Sometimes, life is strange. And you notice interesting patterns in things. Maybe you’ll start seeing the same random number on signs, or in magazines, or on buildings. Or maybe you’ll notice a common theme in the names of the towns and cities you visit. I don’t know … it could be a coincidence. But whatever it is, patterns like this are cool.
One very cool pattern for me has to do with the color “yellow” and my introduction to music. For some weird reason, the first songs that I heard from my favorite musicians are about the color yellow.
When I was a kid, I heard Donovan’s song “Mellow Yellow” and immediately fell in love with his work. A little later, I heard the Beatles’ lyric, “Sky of blue and sea of green in our Yellow Submarine” … whoa. Then one of my friends introduced me to “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” by Elton John. And finally, I was knocked out by Coldplay’s instant classic, “Yellow.”
What’s going on here? Why all the references to yellow? Is it because yellow is especially inspiring? Honestly, I’m not sure what that’s all about … but these are all very good songs. The thing I really want to know is … what color would you want to sing about? That is, what color do you think is the perfect inspiration for a song?
